In '78, SP was still operating freight trains via schedules - in fact you can see a "1" in the number board which would imply the unit last handled the first section of one of the schedules. If running extra (and therefore using the engine number) there would be an "X" in the first postiion. In this photograph, the unit is displaying white classification lights indicating it is an extra. Perhaps the engine is performing yard work and so the crew has yet to set up the correct designation in the number board.s
