Why do the engines need classification lights if they never use them? If I'm correct, CN Gevo have only the red classification light for DPU service. Red = end of train.

Classification lights are carry-overs from the days of steam when locomotives bore flags on the front (or lanterns at night) to identify trains or sections thereof: white = extra (not on the timetable), green = another section following and red = last section. Bear in mind these are old machines (4700 was originally built in 1972 the old GP9s back in the 50's). Railroad operations have changed dramatically since then and the lights are no longer used.
