This unit was built by EMD in June, 1960 and bought by the Nickel Plate Road as an ERS-18a or GP-18 unit NKP 706. In April 1966 after the N&W-NKP/Wabash merger, it became N&W 2706 and renumbered in 1982 after the N&W/Southern merger to NS unit 1496. It was retired 11/29/84 and sold to Island Creek Coal Company in December 1987 and became Island Creek unit 1496.
