Another classic from the SP boneyard.

A Classic Charles. Thanks

Check out that GP7/9.

I just completed painting a brass SP U50 #9951 for a friend. If anyone wants to see, let me know.

Awesome photo, just what is that unit in the foreground? Sort of looks like a GP40P-2 but it shouldn't be there in this shot!
|
I'm guessing that locomotive in foreground referred to above is a DD35B. It makes sense that it would be awaiting the torch along with the U50. Classic shot.

Looks like a GP35 converted to a B unit.
|
The unit in the foreground appears to be a Southern Pacific DD35B.
|
Yeah... the weird engine in front is DD35B #9901.
|
For the record, the unit in the foreground is a DD35, which were designed, sold and built strictly as cabless units. (Essentially, a pair of GP35s on one frame intended to supplement a regular GP35.) Union Pacific later ordered DD35s with cabs, and EMD designated them as DD35As. But, the "B" was never attached to the model DD35. (Picky, ain't I? And don't get me started on the U50 being called a U50B!)

Though not pretty, these things were definitely unique. Quite ugly from the front but not as bad from the side. I like the look of the earlier Big Boats with the B+B+B+B truck arrangement rather than the later ones that rode on the old Turbine C C trucks. Great shot, thanks for sharing.

These were most unique in looks, a rugged looking Locomotive though, much more so than the " Feminized " U50C's ! Too bad one never survived, but at the time the UP was probably not too happy about replacing the wiring.
