That's incredible. I didn't realize the grade was that steep.

Neat photo!

Very unusual perspective, really shows the grade!

Great perspective and to quote Jim Carey "Smokin' ".

Nice shot Mr. Hagen. Just one correction though. The locomotive is a SDP45.

The locomotive is an ex-Erie Lackawanna SDP-45. The spotting features are the brake wheel cut-out in the nose and the lowered edge of cab position of the horn. ...awesome photograph!

Wow, when I went there I never thought that it was that steep. Just Wow!!

Thats an insane grade, looks more rollercoaster than railroad with that kind of telephoto zoom, the clouds of brake shoe smoke really make this an amazing picture.

Talk about purple haze!

This is a great angle, and I love the brake smoke. This is an interesting case where it's tough to judge where the horizon line is. My guess is that this image needs to be rotated CCW about a degree or two - the tracks at the curve are superelevated and so the cab of 6652 should actually be leaning in a bit.

Photos usually don't give true grade any justice, yours is the exception! Great eye for an awesome shot!

Great shot A. Hagen.

When I saw this thumb nail photo, I knew this had to be an Altoona Horseshoe Curve photo from from the 80's because I haven't seen brakeshoe smoke like this since I took some photos around the same era. You just don't see a lot brake shoe smoke on the 'Curve' anymore. Thanks for sharing.
