Apex, NC is one of my favorite places along the old SAL. Apex got its name by being the highest point on the SAL in NC. It was also the crossing of the SAL and the Durham & Southern. The caboose that Diamond D used to frame the C-40 is painted SAL but the trucks say L&N. A fake but better than nothing at all. Also, there are always 2 to 4 motors sitting in Apex as there are a lot of local industries to be switched as well as the turn to Durham.
