I wonder if anyone else has noticed the Metra shops modification to this SW-1. Electro Motive Division ceased stocking parts for these units long ago. Something that has sent many of these to scrap is that original radiator fans (there were two per locomotive) were no longer available. These fans were behind the radiator and blew hot air out the top of the hood. The shops have simply used a standard EMD fan mounted on top of the hood to pull cool air through the radiator and out the top of the hood as on most current locomotives. EMD for some reason persisted in the behind the radiator fan location on switchers until they stopped building them, including the popular SW-1500 series.

Please see photo #167383 for METX 1 prior to it's fan change. The remarks on that photo say that this engine was built in 1939. She may be old but Metra shop employees care enough to keep her running !
