Nice Lightning catch! Sky looks great even without the lightning! Love that you got the whole train in the picture
Posted by Joel Hinkhouse on June 16, 2008
Holy cow, Kevin. This is an exceptional photo in every way I know to measure such things. If this isn't on every 2009-10 Amtrak calendar, then there is something wrong.

Awesome Photo !!!

WOW. I don't know what to say.

Oh my! What a jaw-dropping shot, and a little bit of luck is the cherry on top! PCA from me, and if I were running things, POTW!
Posted by Ron Tilley on June 16, 2008
Lucky catch with that lightning in the back, without being a time lapsed photo, trying to get lightning in ur pick is next to impossible. Very nice pic, well composed with the full train visible. High Five to U.

Great weather catch, Kevin. I'm thinking this image was captured during one of your Rio Grande tunnel motor expeditions to Helper, Utah.

Unbelievable shot Kevin! PCA vote from me!

What a stroke of luck! A great catch.

Awesome! This should definatly get the trio of awards.

Unfortunately, not leaving a comment doesn't do any good to show how speechless I am so I guess I will have to tell you. Just a little bit of luck and have yourself a PC! Great job being out there and excellent timing on the shutter button.

Too late for the trio, maybe a POTW and the obvious PC? Nicely composed and superb timing.

Great Shot!! PCA here.

Simply an amazing photo Kevin. PCA from me for sure. I agree, AMTRAK needs this for their calender.

I'm with Andrew, 100% at a loss for words. I shot many of us dream of, but never attain it. Fantastic work, with some luck on your side.

I agree with all the other comments so all I will say is PCA from me.

Fabulous! Now it's time to head for cover before that lightning gets any closer!

Wow! Thanks for all the comments guys. Considering the company that I am in, it is quite humbling! Mr Belmont, your prediction was exactly correct. Got this on the 7th annual trip to Solider Summit.

One of the best Amtrak shots of the year, no doubt. Excellent work. Another PCA vote from me.

I would love to know, Keven, how you could sit on a masterpiece like this for three years! Thanks for taking it out of the box.
Posted by Kevin Morgan (ColoradoRailfan.com) on June 17, 2008
The reason I haven't submitted this (and probably won't submit it) to Amtrak for the calendar is because, if I understand the rules correctly, I would have to give up the rights to the photo - assuming of course that it was selected as the winner. I don't really want to turn it over to Amtrak! If I could keep the right to it, I would have submitted it long ago. :)

Unbelievable photo! What incredible luck with the lightning in the shot. Just an awesome picture overall.

Kevin, thats the best shot I've ever seen of an Amtrak train. Well done, excellent timing, excellent lighting and very dramatic.
Posted by Brian Sellers on June 18, 2008
Absolutely outstanding Kevin! If you've held onto this since 2005, I'm quite curious to see what else you have hinding in your photo archives :)

Wow! Luck was on your side there. Awesome photo, Kevin!

Outstanding job love it!!

That weather, or in the background, appears to be a mirobrust, or even a tornado. Very dangerous to be out that day, and with that end car, an extremely well put and timed photograph. Nicely done.

Awesome.

Really nice job here Kevin! Love the lighting strike in the distance.

Insane! Very awesome...

Most people think lightening comes down from the clouds when actually the opposite is true. Here three streams of electrons (current) are leaving the electrically negatively charged ground, combining, and connecting to the positively charged clouds. That's not to say the train is not interesting too. Thanks for a great shot.

I think this photo is quite obviously enhanced - with a shutter speed of 1/250 second, a lightning bolt would be barely visible - and extremely lucky. I think the lightning has been pasted-in.
Posted by Kevin Morgan (ColoradoRailfan.com) on July 14, 2008
Well Stu, that is pretty insulting to accuse me of doctoring this photo by digitally adding in the lightning bolt. But it is there in the original RAW image file and it very clear. The image is enhanced some for color saturation, contrast, etc. But I would *never* alter a photograph - as far as its content goes - and post it on the web. I also already stated that it was the luckiest shot I've ever taken. Caught me completely by surprise. But, I guess you can believe whatever you want to believe......

Talk about perfect timing, I don't think I'd ever get that lucky, excelent (and lucky) shot.
