Wow, what great shot. I have shot this location so many times over the past few years, and it is amazing to compare the then and now. Keep the classic Altoona stuff coming!

Pennsy 9690 and its B-unit mate are both F7 models. While the late, Phase IV F3 had the same general appearance, the dynamic brake cooling appeared as two rectangular vents on the prior model, instead of the single 36" fan shown here. The early, side-mounted number boards were special-ordered by the PRR, so as to be more visable when the units were used in helper service.

These units used so much sand it looks like the P-company painted the trucks silver, which PRR never did, as far as I know.
