My guess is: at some point it was the back of the train.

I'd say it's a local and running without an EOT and that the flag was used for the rear but the crew didn't need to walk the train and place it on the rear car due to switching.

Why a red flag on the front? Maybe mauve was already taken.

From my experience on this line my guess is that the engines ran light north or railroad west with the flag in place.They didnt need the EOT that they were carring.My guess is they ran west to Marion or Monnette, under the symbol L2V.Picked up their cars and placed a EOT on the other end.
