Look into the recess on the nose of L&N 1201 and note that it is devoid of the rachet-type hand brake that would normally reside there. The L&N was under the control of the Atlantic Coast Line, and the ACL felt that locomotive hand brakes were an extravagance, and ordered its locomotives witthout that appliance. Dutifully, the L&N followed suit and implemented a program to remove such devices from locomotives built with such equipment, and began ordering new locomotives without them too. This SD35 is an example, but I've seen pictures of all sorts of L&N power, from Alco and GE as well, so modified. How this was legal, I don't know, but it all changed with the ACL-Seaboard Air Line merger. All subsequent, SCL and L&N-ordered power, post merger, came fully equipped.
