It always ran like this, from 1982 (when the International was started) until 1999, when Amtrak was forced to substitute their own engines due to signal changes on their Michigan Corridor.

As an alternative during this time, both VIA and Amtrak respectively operated pure sets of their own equipment. At the time of the photograph, it was rather a novelty to see the mix of VIA power and Amtrak cars, as shown here. As a matter of practice, whatever works!

It was sad to see it go when I rode the final train form Toronto, would have been a great route if they ran it via detroit/windsor.

E Garrett, The trains ran the way you described in your above comment between 1982 and 1992. After 1992, they switched to using VIA engines and Amtrak cars on the train all the time, which is the way it was run from 1993 to 1999. The only time I ever saw an Amtrak engine on this train was in 1998, when one of the Florida Fun Train units assigned to Chicago came up to visit for a few days.
