Great shot William! How long on that bridge?

Thanks for the posting. Just a question. Who, in the name of all that's holy, had the idea to make a boxcar a part of this otherwise beautiful train? Come on NS!

Good shot there Bill!! I tried getting him in Hagerstown this afternoon and missed him by 15min.!! Guess he's coming back north in 2 weeks.

That's a Head End Power boxcar. It was used by Conrail on their OCS trains and eventually was used on some of the NS excursions during the final days of the steam program when NS decided to go with HEP on their excursion fleet. It was in Brunswick Green and Gold previously, following the E units.

Beautiful shot!! I agree...the GP38 and the boxcar mess up the flow of the train.

I'm with Sid...lose the GP-38 as well! But great shot just the same. The more F-units running around these days the better. I love it.

My vote for the worst butchered covered wagon paint scheme. Claytor would roll over in his grave. Nice shot anyway. Thanks.

I rode the Conrail OCS many times and NEVER saw HEP car. It did not exist to the best of my knowledge.

I wonder where the fourth unit is?? When they came by Johnson City, TN. last fall they had a A-B-B-A consist, but they really look great as far as I am concerned.

The boxcar is used when the train will be sitting for an extended period of time, such as at the Masters, or Derby when the train acts as a motel of wheels. The boxcar never goes with the train during normal runs, the cars have their own power supply, whereas in the past 2 of the Conrail E8s had HEPs while the 3rd (4022) had a steam generator. While the 38 does quite fit in the shot at least its not leading. Obviosuly the 3 Fs (5200 hp total, 1800 hp each) are not enough power to get 16 heavyweights all the way to Georgia. The 4th "Penguin" (the other F9A) should be enough with the A-B-B to handle any OCS train NS throws at them.

Great shot!, The second F9A-NS 4271 wasn't ready yet. hope to see it soon. This is great to see all these photos so soon. Thank you!

The lead unit has a HEP generator, you can see the HEP exhaust stack on the firemans's side rear! Nice pic BTW

Nice shot William, Also to reply to the question about the HEP, The 4270 has HEP installed, But I was told by a very reliable shop source that the HEP wasn't quite in working order just yet, It is installed inside, But not able to be used yet. Tony Kimmel

About the powerboxcar, unless the GP38-2 has HEP run through capabilities, there is no way for the HEP to get from the F-units to the train, nessicitatiing the need for a powerboxcar.

Great shot William!!! Someone finally answered my unasked question about the boxcar. KA Holley, I figure that the other a unit has been rebuilt to resemble a GP38-2!!!!

Too bad NS retained that sickly AirChime K5LA, the classic Nathan M5 would sound so much better.

Nice shots of the OCS with the "new" F9 units. After seeing what CSX did to the F40s, I was hopeful that NS would resurrect the classic "Tuxedo" on the F9s. Thanks to you for the pictures and thanks to NS for resurrecting the Tuxedo.
