Nice shot, Dick! Mike was right in saying this was a cool locomotive as well as a rare one. Santa Fe was the only railroad to own U28CG's and they only had 10 of them.

I can't help but relate this story...an old girlfriend of mine, from Bartlesville, OK., rode the Tulsan to KC for the Beatles show in '64...

I rode the Tulsan many a time in the mid 50s from Bartlesville to Independence in the morning and back to Bartlesville in the evening. My mother's sister lived in Independence and mom would take me with her to go visit. When I was in high school I would ride the Tulsan up to KC to take in an Athletics (not Royals) baseball game in the afternoon and then catch the evening train back to Bartlesville on its way to Tulsa. Great memories and a great time to live in.

Great shot, but really triggers melancholy for me. I worked in Independence a few times between 1982 and 1987 and, though it was still a pretty interesting small railroad town, it was just a shadow (particularly on the ATSF side) of what you witnessed in 1968. Tulsan gone, depot gone, platforms gone... the list goes on and on. Beautiful vignette of a vanished time.
