What's the purpose of the train, besides looking really cool?

Real good question - I saw it in action as we were working in the yard. The backhoe can easily travel the length of the train to drop ballast, rip-rap, or whatever they wish. I have to imagine the reverse is true for picking up old ties, etc. We were working on other tracks and I didn't see what they were unloading but there is a huge pile of ballast on the south end of the yard so I suspect they were adding some ballast to select areas...
