Yes, both steam- and diesel-powered trains required electric locomotives northbound, but because the Mount Royal grade was downhill from the portal to Central Station, southbound diesel-powered trains could operate without electric locomotives, as they were basically coasting and braking.

Relics indeed ... those electric locomotives entered service in 1914 and were used daily until the mid 1990s.
