This is a great pic, however the Santa Fe did not put train numbers in the number boards as did UP and SP; 17 and 41 are the engine numbers. Train 17 was indeed the WB Super Chief, but in 1953, Santa Fe train no. 41 was a mixed train which ran between Waynoka and Buffalo, Oklahoma!

Based upon the shadows I'd say that it is a around noon. That, and the appearance of the consist behind engine # 17 (something no respectable railroader should ever do), with its headlight on for departure, would make this # 20 the Chief. If so, the adjacent power may be waiting for its train to be shoved into the station, or it is already spotted as either the El Cap or the GC. What do you think? And, yes Jim, this is a wonderful shot from a place in time only 'old heads' can really touch in their minds. Now there are just a bunch of Pacific Surfliners, Metrolinks, and Gold route "trains" and only 3 long distance Amtrakers. I guess some is better than none?
