Craig, if it is indeed 1996 in the photo, there is nothing typical about that lash-up with the 7373 leading. That's an intact SP red MARS light up front AND Gyralight up top in as-delivered form T-minus only 4 months and 8 days before UP merger day!!! Great catch!

I just dug out the slide again, Ryan, and the dates are correct. (Hey, it never hurts to double check.)

I too was surprised to see a fully intact light package and no ditch lights at this late date as pointed out by Ryan Martin. I usually study the pictures before I read the info or the caption and the first thing I noticed were the lights on the lead unit which made me think this was not much later than about '91 or so. Then I saw what made me think I was seeing an SD45 that was so rare that magazines and books that I've read hadn't even known about it, with the a/c on the roof! That's when my eye caught the speed lettering on the last unit, post '91. At that point I had to give in and check the date. Ah, ok, that must be a SD40M-2 from MK! But , the lights on the SD40 would've made my day to have seen, especially if the oscillating headlight was on! Oh and also, the 40 is sporting a UP style snowplow. Man, I love and miss the Espee!
