Ya know, UP should just paint all the locomotives they use out west back into SP colors so they don't always look so dirty.

Man, UP 5786 definitly needs a bath

A major problem arises when you use the American flag as your main graphic element, operating such a locomotive in this condition is inexcusable. Come on Union Pacific, take those license fees you're charging every model manufacturer and publisher, and put them into a budget to keep these flagged locomotives clean!

Or else risk having Athearn, Atlas and the rest put out a dirty UP scheme in HO! At one occasion I did see a filthy engine with a clean flag.

Not Armour Yellow anymore. Most UP's in this area are painted Tunnel Gloss.

That's a despicable display. There is no way that engine should be let loose on rails without at least a run through the shower. The flag is never to be displayed that vulgar. Thanks, UP, for showing such great American spirit.

Well maybe there is a way to make UP clean the flag up, or is there? A petition, Better Business Bureau, etc? I agree it isn't very patriotic of them to not keep the flag clean!

Funny how the cleanest thing on that unit is the UP shield to the left of the flag.

We Brits can get away with that on our American layouts, but at least most of our locos over here are clean! Go on Walthers, Athearn, Atlas and others - Dare you to produce this in model form!!

Wow, that's terrible. I no longer wonder why Sou/NS chose the color they did! I'll just find comfort in that it's not really a flag, just a painted facsimile of one. Even if the flag wasn't a disgrace to patriotism, that engine is to UP!

Corporate Pride.

I work for UP and there not know for clean engines, especially when they will get durtied right back up again in the desert but they should at least clean off the american Flag

I agree with everyone on this one, Union Pacific, you should be ashamed for the way you have disgraced the American Image by letting the flag units get so filthy, and it is also a great way to show the troops how you support them by dirtying the one reason they fight for. Thanks alot.

Wow - couldn't agree more. That locomotive is just sad. I agree with the comments above. If you're going to use the graphic, then take the responsibility to keep it clean. You can't have the best of both worlds here!

Seeing that brings a tear to my eye. The Kings in charge of the UP should be ashamed of themselves.
Posted by J. Gassaway on August 24, 2006
Come on, guys- it's a freakin' locomotive! It's not supposed to look like it's been prepped for a car show. You guys are making way too much of this.

J. Gassaway, that is wrong. People should make a big deal about this. The issue here is not at all how dirty the engine is. Most people probably couldn't care less. The issue here is the fact there is an American flag displayed, and the company should have respect for such. I agree with all those who have stated how disgusting this is to display our flag this way. I guess some people still do care. Apparently some don't.

Yeah, it's wrong, an employee should at least have the discipline to wash it off, it's their flag too, you gotta take stuff like this into your own hands. If Mr. Gassaway wants to think it's ok to disgrace our national symbol, that's fine by me.

That being said, let me just clarify that I am a UPRR fan and I believe this is far below their level of image conscienceness that they've traditionally upheld. Thank goodness that this type of occurance is fairly rare, and for the most part limited to locomotives in the west that spend half their time inside of mountains. We don't typically get that here in the midwest and south.

Locomotive or not, that flag is a symbol of my country. Maybe that means nothing to you, but it does to me. This is precisely why I am opposed to a flag being used in this manner. It's disrespectful.
