This train was run a couple of weeks after the offical shutdown on March 31 and before the Iowa Interstate had begun service. The rails were very rusty and there was a concern that the crossing signals and gates would not operate. A group of us leap frogged from crossing to crossing in case we were needed to flag the traffic. That's my truck on the right side of the photo. This was one of my last duties on the Rock Island before moving to West Virginia to work for the C&O.

Very interesting shot. Rob. I spent some time around Bureau just a couple years after you made this shot, but it was not the same...
