After passing the city limit sign on the Jasper branch, the Sequatchie Valley Railroad local job slowly passes behind South Pittsburg High School, as the train heads north to Jasper, TN. When this original line was completed in the late 1860s it was manly used of hauling coal out of the Cumberland Plateau, at the time in 1896 before the name South Pittsburg came to be, the very first post office of this town was open and this location was dub Battle Creek Mine for the small-scale mining operations began during this period.
