On a hot August afternoon, with a burned-off field in the distance, Santa Fe 5993 East roars up the steep grade on the approach to tunnel 2 on the line over Tehachapi Pass. The big FP45 is in need of new paint, and four years hence will get a coat of red and silver when the railroad brings back the famous "warbonnet" scheme in its Super Fleet incarnation.
