Drifting downgrade into Austin, Montana, on the morning of June 29, 2016, is a Montana Rail Link helper set heading back to Helena to help another train up Mullan Pass. Note the large cut above the lead locomotive—it is the location of Iron Ridge Tunnel that was bypassed using “Iron Ridge Cut.” With recent double-tracking widening the cut, a glimpse of the concrete portal of the abandoned tunnel can now be seen from below at Austin.
