Union Pacific and Electro-Motive Division tested EMD’s SD90MAC-Hs in 1998 on a rare movement of coal loads going up the 2-percent grade from Denver toward the Moffat Tunnel. Union Pacific Nos. 8503, 8502 and 8505 splicing EMD’s test car on the head end, along with specially-painted EMD No. 8504 as rear DPU, are working upgrade with a train of 32 loaded coal hoppers. The test train is approaching Tunnel 1 just east of Plainview, Colorado, on February 12, 1998.
