Remarks & Notes
Eureka on the High Bridge. A late August afternoon finds the 1875-vintage Eureka & Palisade Number 4 hauling a passenger extra across the famous High Bridge above the Animas River at Tacoma, Colorado. Aptly named, this bridge is the tallest of all of the Animas crossings on the old D&RG Silverton Branch. Originally built as a wooden trestle in 1881, it was quickly replaced with the iron structure you see here. The bridge remained unaltered until the D&RGW sold the Silverton Branch to Charles Bradshaw in the 1980s and the line became a tourist operation known as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Under Bradshaw, this bridge was strengthened with the addition of a lot of external bracing, in order to accommodate the large K-36 and K-37 locomotives that would later be used in high-volume passenger operations on this line.

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
