One of many steam trips that occurred during the 1970 NRHS convention was this Charleston-Savanna roundtrip excursion, seen here southbound on ACL rails. On this day Consolodation #722 led Mikado #4501, doubleheading to pull a heavy train. This was pre-N&W 611 restoration, which would be able to handle the long consists solo under the NS banner. The 1970 convention featured a cornicopia of various Southern steamers, running in different configurations over various routes. As the Kinks and later Van Halen sang, "Oh won't you tell me...where have all the good times gone?" Thanks to John A. Craft for digging out the trip date/route info from his extensive logs including those of the late Jim Bistline, the father of the largest U.S. steam revival in the diesel era.
