Remarks & Notes
Winter in the Rockies. The Durango & Silverton's annual Winter Photo Train transits the ledge above Elbert Creek with the frozen Shalona Lake and the foothills of the San Juan Mountains as a backdrop. This year, the power was the newly overhauled K-28 #478. The loco was sporting a 1930s paint scheme lettered for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad....complete with the "toilet seat" logo. The consist included some freight cars as well as a Pullman Green RPO, two coaches and a caboose....all lettered for the D&RGW. A fresh layer of snow and a chill in the air provided a great winter feel to the photos taken by the patrons this day.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
