This historic marker and small stretch of track mark the Southern Pacific's one time Santa Monica, CA Long Wharf (actually located in today's Pacific Palisades), which was supposed to turn Santa Monica into the Port of Los Angeles. A competing project in a small pair of towns further south known as Long Beach and San Pedro had a little more success. The present town of Santa Monica can be seen in the distance. Some of Thomas Edison's earliest railroad movies were taken of trains on this line.
