Between North Manchester and Silver Lake, the rails of the Marion Branch turn to a northwest-southeast alignment, allowing nose-lit shots of afternoon northbounds year-round. Here, 144 passes the MP 41 signal and a small stand of birch trees as it begins to climb the 0.5-0.7% grade of Rose Hill, near the Wabash-Kosciusko county line.
