While clearing snow and ice on April 25, 1999 for the spring opening of the railroad, C&TS 484 (lettered DRGW for photo charters) hit ice in the flangeways and derailed just west of Los Pinos tank. Fortunately no one was injured, but the engine was close to rolling over and would not see service again until 2004. This derailment marked the end of using rail equipment (including the rotary) to open the line in the spring, and now the clearing is done by dozers and front end loaders.
