Remarks & Notes
With its forested 5.6% grade climbing hundreds of vertical feet in a couple of miles towards a 19th century turntable and the largest building in the world, the BNSF Boeing Hill spur between Everett and Mukilteo isn't the typical switch job. The 20-foot wide (wide not long) container in the background contains fuselage skins for a 777, they are made in Japan and shipped to Seattle by freighter, then barged to Mukilteo, and transloaded to train at the bottom of the hill. The locomotives have a few tweaks to the dynos and fluid pans from what I understand. GN built the line in 1967 to accommodate the 747 program. I don't remember when the barge slip was put in but the 777 program predates the 787 so the one-piece cylindrical skins are relatively recent, but most stuff for both programs has come from Nagoya in special containers made using 6 regular 40 footers and some big doors on them. The turntable at the top of the hill spins the railcars to get the container doors in the right direction for transloading in the factory.
