The "Spirit of Roanoke" rides again. Norfolk & Western J-Class #611, "The Spirit of Roanoke" hauls a short passenger special westbound on Pennsylvania's Strasburg Rail Road (SRC), a few minutes after sunrise during a November, 2022 photo shoot organized by the SRC and the locomotive's owner, the Virginia Museum of Transportation. She's pictured transiting the Fairview section of the line, just east of the Red Caboose Motel. Although the SRC's wooden passenger coaches seen here literally predate the 611 by roughly half a century, it's about the closest we can still come to seeing the Big J with a matching red passenger train, the likes of which she pulled during her short career in the 1950s.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
