Canadian Pacific EMD SD40-2F “Red Barn” No. 9005 and EMD SD40-2 No. 6075 sit in front of the yard office at Cranbrook, British Columbia, on the afternoon of June 27, 2006. CP had the third largest bought-new fleet of SD40-2s in North America, behind Burlington Northern and Union Pacific. More than two years after EMD built its last SD40-2 for Nationales de Mexico, CP came knocking on EMD’s door for more. They obliged, but the locomotives built were no ordinary Dash 2s, as CP took delivery of 25 big red custom-built cowl units labeled SD40-2Fs. A great way to put a capstone on 5,752 3,000 hp 645-powered C-C locomotives!
