Express train to Ruth. Nevada Northern's Locomotive #81 hauls a short express passenger train toward the Mines District at Ruth, NV, bringing personnel and light cargo to the extensive Kennecott Consolidated Copper operations in the area. The featured cars in this consist are Baggage Express #20, which is a restored Railway Post Office, and Coach #5, which dates back to 1882. The latter is a very comfortable "Chair Car", which features nicely upholstered seats and separate seating sections for Men and Women. Collectively, these 2 cars are sometimes referred to as the "Steptoe Flyer" consist, because they were used extensively in high speed passenger service on the main line, which runs north of Ely, all the way to Cobre.
While it would be unusual to see them on this line (referred to as the "Ore Line"), it would not be unheard of, as it was sometimes necessary to haul personnel to the mining operations. Typically, however, passenger trains on the Nevada Northern were nearly always hauled by one of the line's Baldwin 10-wheelers, which had taller drivers and were built for high speed operations with light consists. One example of such a locomotive does survive in the form of Locomotive #40, but during the 2022 Winter Photo Shoots, that locomotive was in the midst of a 1,472 Service Day Inspection and will not be back in operation for some time.
