A room with a view. DRGW 473 takes a Silverton Mixed Train around the High Line Horseshoe Curve at MP 469.5 in a scene shot from the cliffs high above the track level. Reaching this location requires some climbing and is not for the faint of heart. The climb is steep, rocky, and the elevation does not make it easier. It is also easy to get lost up here....and did I mention there are critters, including some of the larger cats, living in these hills. I definitely don't recommend going up here alone. Fortunately, on this day, I had plenty of company, as several of my colleagues from the 2016 Willow Creek Productions Charter elected to make the climb with me. We were not only treated to several run-bys with our chartered mixed train, but we also got a run-by from Train 461, the first of the day's two tourist trains, as it headed north to Silverton....which was also our eventual destination.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
