Remarks & Notes
On what turned out to be a very cold day a buddy and I drove the 212 miles from Anchorage to Cantwell where the Alaska RR snow fleet had tied up for the night. With a 0600 call time we knew we would have to leave early to make sure we had eyes on the train as a train this small would be very easy to lose sight of in the vast Alaska landscape. We arrived about 0730, sun rise was still hours away. The train was plowing the Cantwell Siding, temps were about 30 below zero and we had a low level Aurora in the northern sky. By about 830 they were ready to head north and we followed suit. By this time the sky was beginning to lighten up and we shot a few photos between there and Healy. It wasn't until their arrival at Healy that we got our first peek at the sun. It wouldn't last long as there was just a small dip in the mountains that allowed it to shine through, fortunately this coincided with the arrival of the train. The result is that which you see here, Time is about 1209 and the temp is a mind numbing 36 below zero. Fortunately not much wind. And that is the story behind my first pictures in 2019.

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Album created by member Lee Kirchhoff

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
