A one of a kind. Montreal Locomotive Works outshopped CP 4744 in May 1971 as a demonstrator. It was rated at 4,000 H.P. and was essentially an M-636 but with an 18 cylinder instead of a 16 cylinder 251 primemover and a must larger radiator. It had a very checkered history. In 1973 it was involved in a major derailment and had to be rebuilt by the Angus Shops In 1981 it suffered a major engine failure. It was then rebuilt as a test bed for Brown Boveri AC traction. The six DC traction motors were replaced with four AC motors and it became A1A-A1A instead of C-C. It was outshopped in 1984. It was retired in 1992 and now resides at Exporail in St. Constant, QC.
