Fifty years ago tonight saw the end of the New Haven Railroad as it was absorbed into Penn Central at midnight. The final NH-operated westbound edition of Boston-New York train 27, the Merchants Limited, prepared to depart New Haven, CT, and head off into the night behind EP-5 class electric 371. For years this was the NH's premier train between Boston and New York, well stocked with parlor cars and a diner. Anyone making a round trip on this New Year's Eve would be coming home on PC.
