Another railway line of Chile, which was partly destroyed by the heavy floods in august 2015, was the "Tocopilla" of the Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile from Tocopilla to Maria Elena (1067 mm gauge or 3 ft 6 in). The railway line was shut down in november 2015 and road traffic took over. In april of 2012, the loaded evening train from Barriles down to Tocopilla with GE boxcabs 289A # 601 and # 607 is passing the memorial for a deceased railroader. The memorial commemorates the railway accident in November 2009 when a train from Maria Elena with diesel locomotive # 3 could not stop in Barriles and ran into the strong gradient direction Tocopilla. The train derailed at this point, the train driver was killed, the locomotive # 3 and several of the cars were badly damaged.
