As the sun begins to set, we catch the Macon Local pulling hard out of the tree cut in the community of Lauderdale, MS. Leading the train is a recently rebuild EMD GP40-2WL. This unit was formally CN #9516. KCS purchased this unit and several others in the 1990's. During that time the units did not have AC, forcing the crews to exercise the "open door policy" to keep cool during the summer months. During their rebuilding, KCS added new features, such as AC and PTC equipment. Luckily, the cab stayed the same. I, for one, enjoy these 4 window Canadian Cab units.
