Remarks & Notes
Reading 96 Redux
Conrail’s Hagerstown Secondary crosses in the foreground, as the modern iteration of “Reading 96”, CSX R342 (Cumberland to Enola), approaches NC Tower in Hagerstown. Two Chessie SD50s (CS/C&O 8565 and CS/CSXT 8591) power the train headed for the (former WM) Lurgan Subdivision on September 18, 1989. Some 33 miles distant at CP-LURGAN (Shippensburg), R342 would be re-symbolled as Conrail WHLU96 for the balance of the trip to Enola.

NC Tower was closed in 1986. In PRR/PC/CR/NS terms, the location was/is known as “TOWN” interlocking.

The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
