| There is nothing quite like standing next to a live steam engine as it moves past you. The senses are overloaded with sounds of high pitched whistles, the hiss of escaping steam, the rhythmic thumps of the mechanical rods as they turn the driving wheels, and the plumes of smoke and ash escaping the stack. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates a variety of such steam engines. The recent large fire that plagued the Durango area was believed by some to have been caused by the same engines that pump life into the local economy. |
