| Switzerland has a new gem of a steamlocomotive! Cogwheel 0-8-0 HG 4/4 # 704 of the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke, built by SLM Winterthur in 1923 and delivered to Indochina (now Vietnam) for the line from Thap Cham to Da Lat. Brought back to Switzerland in 1990 more or less as scrap. Rebuilt during the last 12 years with about 50000 man hours in the workshops of Chur and Uzwil. The 4 cylinder compound locomotive with separate cogwheel and adhesion drives "Winterthur system" is on the 11.0 % grade rack section of the Abt cogwheel system near Realp. The toothed rack consists of two adjacent plates, the two toothed wheels of the locomotive also consist of two gear rims slightly offset against each other. |
