Remarks & Notes
Frisco 1630 charges east. Breaking with her standard operating procedure, Mother Nature times the only glimpse of sunlight on an otherwise cloudy day with one of Frisco 1630's late afternoon eastbound test runs down the museum mainline. In this close-up view of the big decapod, you can see some of her more unique features, such as the front-mounted air pumps. I'm used to seeing those on Alco-built machines, but not so much on a Baldwin. Her steam and sand domes are also spaced much more closely than on most of the engines I've seen. Lastly, take a look at her drivers. To me at least, they do look recessed under the firebox a little more than what I see on most engines. True, this engine was re-gauged from the 5 ft., WWI-era Russian Standard to the slightly narrower American Standard, but it sure looks like more than 3.5".
