Completed by 1953 Union Pacific's third main track over Sherman Hill, also known as the 'Harriman Line', traded 10 extra miles for an easier gradient for heavy westbounds on the busy Overland Route. Between Harriman and Dale 3-track traverses some rugged and truly beautiful scenery in its fight for elevation. Near the top of 'the Hill' the Harriman Line slices through arguably its most impressive trademark, Dale Cut, bored through Wyoming granite Dale Cut brings 3-track in line to reunite with mains 1 & 2 at Dale Junction. On this occasion the near vertical granite cliffs frame a westbound grain train as it struggles towards the top of Sherman Hill, the endeavor of their climb nearly within sight.
