This 0-4-0T saddle tank engine known as a ‘dinky’ was owned and operated by the Great Western Sugar Company and was used to shuffle sugar beets into the processing plant. Great Western at one point in the 1970’s operated 13 of these engines in various plants along the front range, and at the time it was the largest operable fleet of steam engines anywhere in the United States. The design of the engine enabled the locomotive to operate in the vey humid environment of the sugar beet factory. This particular engine (#2176) was built in 1930 and moved from its original base at Loveland, Colorado to Fort Morgan, Colorado in 1976. Bill Marvel has posted a great 1958 shot of this same engine (see photo 582075).
