| Former Santa Fe EMD F45 No. 5972 leads a Fox Valley & Western freight picking up cars at Chicago & North Western’s Butler Yard in Wisconsin on January 1, 1995. FV&W was a “paper railroad” operated as a subsidiary of Wisconsin Central formed to operate portions of former Green Bay & Western and Fox River Valley railroads that WC merged in 1993. Trailing No. 5972 is a Santa Fe SD45 and C&NW GP50, while a headlight from a following C&NW train waiting behind to pull forward to the yard office can be seen. WC acquired 31 SD45s and two F45s from Santa Fe in August 1994—and bought one more SD45, a FP45 and four more F45s a few months later in May of 1995. |
