Remarks & Notes
For the third year in a row, the Grand Canyon Railway hosted the "Man vs. Machine" race. The race is a battle between bicyclist and the Grand Canyon Railway's 2-8-2 steam engine #4960 in a 60 mile run from the Grand Canyon National Park to the Route 66 town of Williams, Ariz. At Red Lake, GCRY 4960, originally built for Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in 1923, comes to a stop to let the lead group of cyclist catch up to the powerful locomotive. The cyclist would take the lead, but then 4960 highballs out of Red Lake and leaves the riders behind in smoke. The "machine" would go on to win the race.
