| The Northern Explorer commenced the Auckland - Wellington run in 2012 and is affectionately known as "Dora" by rail workers and fans. The popularity of this train and the the other Scenic Journeys trains Tranz Alpine and Coastal Pacific has KiwiRail considering additional cars, this time likely built overseas since the virtual closure of works at Hillside, Dunedin where the design awarded cars were built. The river in this view is Waikato, the longest in New Zealand.
