Norfolk Southern Yardmaster Pete Hypes poses for a photo inside the Elmore Yard office in Mullens, W.Va. Just days after this photo was taken, Hypes celebrates his 60th year of working for the railroad. His career started on the Virginian Railway as a call boy and he later worked for the Norfolk & Western and Norfolk Southern as a yardmaster. During the time of this photo, he held the highest seniority of any yardmaster on the entire Pocahontas Division. As if that is not impressive enough, Hypes has spent his entire rail career working the same terminal - Elmore Yard in the coalfields of southern West Virginia.
